Protestant Elisabeth Clinic, Berlin

Paul Gerhardt Diakonie has been consistently developing the location of the Evangelische Elisabeth Klinik in Lützowstraße in Berlin Tiergarten - near Potsdamer Platz - since 2012. In this context, landscape architect Kathrin Lesser has transformed the aging green space into a small landscape garden. c. fischer innenarchitekten has embedded a new guidance system in this open space design. A particular challenge was to replace the familiar structure of giving patients, on request, complicated directions to a particular building with a simple number system for the entrances; "international numbers" which are easy to read even at a distance. This is an important aspect for the patients, who come from all nations: if the content changes, individual strips can be replaced. The Evangelische Elisabeth Klinik is the second oldest hospital in Berlin and the oldest hospital of the Paul Gerhardt Diakonie. Pastor Johannes Gossner founded the hospital in 1837 on the current site on Lützowstraße. 1840 the hospital was named after its patroness, the then Queen Elisabeth. In the 1960s of the 19th century the hospital also served as a mother house for deaconesses. Protestant sisters were trained in nursing and sent to other professions. In 1867, a new building replaced the old clinic building, in which numerous patients were medically treated for 70 years. In the last days of the Second World War, the hospital was largely destroyed. A laborious reconstruction began. In 1969, the association's board of directors concluded a management contract with the board of trustees of the then Elisabeth Diakonissen- und Krankenhaus foundation, which resulted in the takeover a few years ago. Today, the Evangelische Elisabeth Klinik is a highly modern clinic in the immediate vicinity of Potsdamer Platz and stands for first-class medical and nursing care.
